Tour de France Stage 2 - SRM Power File Analysis
As expected it was a long day in boiling heat in the front of the peloton for Team Saxo Bank on the second stage of the Tour de France during the 187 kilometres between Monaco and Brignoles where three category 4-climb and an initial category 3-climb were passed.
A breakaway of fire riders, Auge (Cofidis), Dessel (AG2R), Clement (Rabobank), Veikkanen (Francaise des Jeux), escaped early on the stage from the main field and held a lead in front of the chasing field with Team Saxo Bank as a locomotive until 10 kilometers from the finish line. Here the sprinters arranged their teams to the big mass sprint set-up and on the narrow streets of Brignoles several crashes made the final quit dangerous, however in the end Mark Cavendish of Team Columbia-HTC won the stage in a powerful sprint.
"It was a hard and hot stage where we obviously made a huge effort in the front of the peloton but it was not harder than we expected and we had everything under control. Frank Schleck crashed but he only suffered superficial bruises on his hip, so we are all ready again tomorrow to defend the jersey”, said team owner Bjarne Riis after the stage.
Team Saxo Bank rider, Fabian Cancellara, was grateful to the team after the stage:
"It was very hot today. The whole peloton suffered from the heat on the undulating route and I am happy to be in the leader's jersey again tomorrow. The team did a tremendous job to keep me in that position. My goal is to keep the jersey until the team time trial which we also want to win. Then we will take one day at a time”, said Fabian Cancellara after the stage.
SRM Data Summary for Chris Anker Sorensen:
Chris had a fairly easy day for his second ever Tour de France stage. He only hit a max 10-minute value of 364w which is well below his threshold, and for the first three and a half hours of the stage he only averaged 231w. Chris must have changed a front wheel with an hour to go in the stage as we all of a sudden lost all of his data (possibly due to loosing his front wheel speed sensor magnet). Chris's average cadence the first three hours was 94rpm, and he averaged 23.9 mph.
This was a perfect start to the Tour and Chris can only hope for more of the same.
