Stage 7 saw Chris Anker Sorensen’s duties switch from protecting Fabian Cancellara’s lead, to helping Andy and Frank Schleck move up in the general standings. After a brutal climb up to the ski station of Arcalis in the principality of Andorra, there were two Team Saxo Bank riders left in the group of eleven favorites. Alberto Contador of team Astana broke away in the final 5kms and finished 21 seconds ahead of the group that also contained Lance Armstrong and Levi Leipheimer.
Andy Schleck is now ninth in the overall standings. Fabian Cancellara lost more than nine minutes and is now finally gone from the top of the overall standings.
Today’s stage produced 403TSS points for Chris Anker, the highest of the Tour so far, and he also set his highest recorded 20-minute power value of 370w.
"Everything went well and just as planned from our morning meeting. We had no interest in being in the forefront of the field today and waist unnecessary energy. And although I would have liked to have retained the jersey it's ok to lose it today. Fabian has been riding fantastic all week and we are absolutely satisfied with the course so far”, said Bjarne Riis after stage.
