Stage 4 of the 2009 Tour of California was another hard day in the saddle for Rory Sutherland. With so many riders motivated and the sun finally shining on the peloton, it was a day for serious racing. Unfortunately, there were still crashes despite the dry roads, but Rory managed to avert all danger and remain towards the front of the pack.

Rory's coach Adnan Kadir provided his insight into the day's race and Rory's performance. "The first hour was very active with a Normalized Power of 376W - just below Rory's LT. [Rory] then managed to keep it relatively mellow through the next rollers and sprint points".

Then for a second time the race sped up. Kadir noted, "On the final grade up Crane Valley Rd, the pace lifted, but not excessively and [Rory] was able to roll relatively easily to the finish. It's worth noting that there was 995m of elevation gain in that first hour and the average speed was still over 40kph."
