Jakob didn't have a great day and he was certainly feeling the affects of Stage 6 the previous day. Stage 6 was Jakob's hardest day in the saddle this year accentuated by the fact that he was i the breakaway for 5 and a half hours. His legs didn;t respond too well today, but that is also the point of why he is here in the first place-- to gain some fitness for the Tour squad.
Jakob finished in an official time of 46:05, which was 4:24 behind the winner Tony Martin (his time was 41:41). Jakob was obviously tired and he simply could not hold onto a pace which would have placed him in the top 20 on the stage. If you break down his race into three parts (roughly 15' each) you can easily see how he could not disipate the lactate build up from lap to top. The average power for the three laps were: 333w, 315w, 304w. His average watts ended up as 316w with a normalized power of 323w. .
Today's time trial performance by Jakob was also affected in large part due to his lower GC ranking and lower motivation to go as hard as possible. Stage 8 Sunday is a very hard final stage where survival is the number one goal. Geting through the final day will not be easy and Jakob may have been thinking about holding back a bit so he can be of better help to Jens Voigt, who is now 5th overall.55th place at 4:24 back
