2012 Tour de France - Stage 11: Albertville - La Toussuire - Les Sybelles 148 km

Chris Anker Sørensen

380

TSS

292 W

Average Power

323 W

Normalized Power

4973

Kilojoules

  • Sørensen was very aggressive on the toughest stage of the Tour so far, spending most of the stage in a break going for a stage win. He set the highest TSS of the Tour to date as well as Peak Power values for 20-minutes to 3 hours. He finished 7th, his best placing of the Tour so far.
  • Sørensen averaged 4.6 w/kg for the entire stage which was 4 hours 43 minutes. Most people cannot hold this for 20 minutes!
  • 4617 m, 15144 feet of total elevation gain.
  • Chris's steady ride today was the key to his success. Compared to previous days and previous TDF, Chris' power was lower than usual today, and it's quite amazing that he performed as well as he did. If he had not been so steady and fought hard today, he would have lost major time to the front climbers. Normally he can ride at 390 watts during the last stages of the Tour, but today, he was at around the 335-355 watts range when at his maximum in the second and third climbs. Seriously impressive that he placed so high (7th) in the finish!

Janez Brajkovic

349

TSS

268 W

Average Power

307 W

Normalized Power

4656

Kilojoules

  • There were four Categorized climbs in Stage 11, and Brajkovic moved up from 13th overall to 8th, with a very strong 8th place result on the stage. Brajkovic spent more than 90 minutes at or above his threshold zone, most of it spent on the final climb of the day, the above-category La Toussuire.
  • Brajkovic set his peak 10-minute power value on the first climb (Col de la Madeleine), then he set his 60-minute peak power on the 2nd climb of the day, the Col de la Croix de Fer.
  • Brajkovic attacked with 12kms to go yet the attempt to gain time in the overall standings was doomed when Nibali bridged across a few minutes later. For the 10 minutes following the attack he averaged 361w (6 w/kg) and covered 4 km (2.5 miles) at a speed of 22.5 kph (14 mph).
  • Peak 2 sec Power was 647W, max power for the day was 715W. Peak Power values are not set for the shorter durations during the mountain stages of the Tour, as the climbs are too long.

Pieter Weening

376

TSS

301 W

Average Power

345 W

Normalized Power

5487

Kilojoules

  • Weening was in the break for the first half of the stage (about 2.5 hours), working very hard: 322 Average Watts, 367 NP, averaging 32.6 kmh (20.2 mph) while climbing 2257m (7448 ft). Wow!
  • Then, the break took its toll and Weening could no longer hold the pace of the group. He was dropped from the break with about 67 km to go in the stage. The remaining 2.5 hours were quite different from the first: 165.9 TSS, 280 Average Watts, 320 NP, averaging 26.2 kmh (16.3 mph) while climbing 2377 m (7844 ft). Still quite impressive numbers, especially for a rider that just gave everything in the first 2.5 hours to stay in the break as long as possible.
  • Weening burned 5487 kJ during the very tough Stage 11 - that is essentially the equivalent of the same amount of calories! In other words, during 5 hours of racing Weening burned through more than 2.5x what most people consume in one day (2000 calories)!

Bernhard Eisel

365

TSS

307 W

Average Power

342 W

Normalized Power

5943

Kilojoules

  • 365 TSS: Biggest TSS day of the Tour so far for Eisel!
  • Eisel maxed out on his Peak 10-min through 90-min Power Values for the Tour so far on the first climb of the day, Col de la Madeleine a 25.3 km Category HC climb with an average grade of 6.2%. His Peak Power values: 447 W 10-minutes, 444 W 12-minutes, 425 W 20-minutes, 404 W 30-minutes, 380 W 60-minutes, 365 W 90-minutes.
  • Eisel is not a climber, yet he managed Col de la Madeleine at an average speed of 20 kph (12.4 mph).
  • One of the shortest stages of the Tour but also one of the most decisive for the GC contenders. It was a hard day for every rider and resulted in the first two riders of the Tour to be time cut (finishing outside of the allowed percentage of winner's time).
  • Fun fact: KJs Eisel has burned so far in Tour (everything including warm-ups, cool downs, etc): 51548

Glossary

TSS

TrainingPeaks' Training Stress Score (TSS) system allows any endurance athlete the ability to quantify their workouts based on their relative intensity, duration and frequency of workouts.

Normalized Power

Normalized power provides a better measure of the true physiological demands of a given training session - in essence, it is an estimate of the power that you could have maintained for the same physiological "cost" if your power output had been perfectly constant (e.g., as on a stationary cycle ergometer), rather than variable.

Intensity Factor

Intensity Factor provides a valid and convenient way of comparing the relative intensity of a training session or race either within or between riders, taking into account changes or differences in threshold power.

w/kg

Watts per kilogram is the standard measurement of a rider's "power to weight ratio" and represents a rider's average power output over a period of time, divided by the rider's body weight. w/kg equalizes power output between riders of various sizes and, all else being equal, increasing power (watts) or decreasing weight (kg) will make a rider faster.
